Happy Valentine’s Day! I hope your day is filled with love, and if not love then chocolate, and if you don’t like chocolate… I don’t know what to tell you, my darling.
In honor of Cupid’s busiest day of the year, I have compiled a list (in no particular order) of some of my favorite tv couples.
Overton Wakefield Jones & Synclaire James-Jones (Living Single)

Long before I knew about “shipping” or the magic of finally seeing your “otp” together, there was Obie and Synclaire. I was recently rewatching Living Single, and even though I definitely had more critiques now then I did as a kid, (falling in love, having a successful career, AND living in a spacious apartment all in your mid 20s? Yeah right) Obie and Synclaire are still one of the cutest couples ever. Every aspect of their relationship was perfect; Obie’s elaborately planned schedule of his life with Synclaire, the fact that they were both clearly crazy about each other from the beginning, and especially Obie’s constant support of any and everything that his girl does. Synclaire is definitely a few eggs short of a basket, and something about that, combined with Overton’s warm genuine Southern nature made for the perfect couple.
Max Goof & Roxanne (A Goofy Movie)

Yes, A Goofy Movie is in fact a movie. I broke my own rule. sue me. (Please do not sue me, I am a struggling 20-something)
Oh, if only all high school crushes were like this. Max and Roxanne were the literal definition of puppy love (get it?). Their’s was a dorky “I like her and she likes me, but I’m oblivious” crush and, just like the rest of the iconic movie, it was so refreshing. They steered away from the traditional idea that a person has to go through some big change for the person they like. And even though Max does make a grand gesture for Roxanne, he didn’t even have because she always liked him. From the moment she heard his hereditary “hyuck!”. Which probably would have been obvious to Max if he wasn’t so hung up on how embarrassing his dad was. Let’s be real though, we all know that Max going all the way cross the country and sneaking into a sold out pay-per-view concert just so he could be on stage and not be seen as a liar definitely sealed his place in Roxanne’s heart. And rightfully so.
Nathan Scott & Haley James-Scott (One Tree Hill)

You may be wondering why I didn’t use a picture of Mr. & Mrs. Scott’s beautiful faces, but there is a very simple explanation. This was their moment for me. The moment I knew that they were gonna be my couple. Their relationship checked all of my “problematic tv tropes that I love it” boxes: nerd/jock dynamic? check. teenage marriage? check. Oh, and Nathan using Haley tutoring him as a way to make Lucas, his half-brother/nemesis super uncomfortable? Perfection. And before you say it, I know that all of that is completely over the top and cheesy. I don’t care. I love them together so so much. And the best thing about them is that in the end, they last. Through all of their issues and every obstacle that finds itself in their way. They just love each other so much. Wow, I’m not crying. You’re crying.
Freddie Brooks & Ron Johnson (A Different World)

Although I would have loved to see A Different World really give Freddie and Dwayne a chance, it was just not in the cards. Luckily, Ron and Freddie’s chemistry was just as strong, if not more. The love/hate, will they/won’t they of their relationship almost made their cheating forgivable. Almost. At the end of the day, the way they got together was messed up (sorry Kim) but you’d be blind if you didn’t see that this couple was bound to happen.
Jon Snow & Daenerys Targaryen (Game of Thrones)

Alright, before you start judging, just hear me out. This was fated in the stars. Regardless of how you feel about the final season of GOT (I will never not be angry) the union of Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen was woven into the narrative of this show since season 1. Come on y’all, it’s A Song of FIRE & ICE. And yes, they’re related. I know. But that was an extremely common practice for their family and THEY DIDN’T KNOW! By the time they did, it was too late. They were already in love. The ending was heartbreaking, not because of the doomed lovers storyline but because it was so rushed and what could have been a full story of love, tragedy, and the price we pay for secrets, turned into whatever they decided to give us at the end. Chalk it up to bad writing.
Randall & Beth Pearson (This Is Us)

What can I say? They’re perfect. Even when they fight, they’re perfect. They have this chemistry that is unmatched by anyone else on their show, and one that is arguably the best on tv right now. Randall is his father’s son so when he believes in something/someone, he can’t see anything else. He believes in his marriage. He believes in Beth. And she believes in him. She fights for him because she knows that even when he is pushing so hard towards a goal that no one else can see that he can do it. And I love that she doesn’t let that stop her dreams and her goals anymore. Theirs is the most realistic love on this list, and I think their relationship means so much to me because it’s attainable but still seems like a fairytale.
Fran Fine & Maxwell Sheffield (The Nanny)

Who doesn’t love these two? Who else was he going to be with? Miss Babcock? Right. Fran and Mr. Sheffield are the poster couple for opposites attract. She’s a flashy girl from Flushing and he’s a successful British Broadway play write. Besides the fact that they both have accents, they have nothing in common. Yet, somehow they work. He’s a stuffy cultured Brit who hires a loud, energetic larger than life Jewish girl from Queens to take care of his kids, and even though she drives him up the wall, he’s smitten. And in the end, he realizes that her laugh is the only one he wants to hear everyday for the rest of his life. But who could blame him?
Bob & Linda Belcher (Bob’s Burgers)

It’s common knowledge that the weirdest people make the best couples. What better example of that fact than the love story of Bob and Linda Belcher. They aren’t the most glamorous couple on my list but that’s one of the many aspects of their appeal. They’re an average lower middle class couple just trying to keep burgers on the grill and glasses on Tina. Mr. & Mrs. Belcher work so well together because they support each other in everything they do. Whether Linda is getting her old high school band back together for revenge on the people who laughed at her 20 years ago at a talent show, or Bob is buying multiple turkeys to figure out who keeps putting their Thanksgiving bird in the toilet, they’ve got each other’s back. On top of that, they’re a dream team as parents, and they have a somewhat successful family business. If that’s not goals, then I don’t know what is.
Cosmo & Wanda ( The Fairly Oddparents)

You don’t stay with just anyone for almost 10,000 years. Countless godchildren and one fairy baby later, Cosmo and Wanda are still going strong. Though they may be primarily known as Timmy Turner’s fairy godparents, but they’re also one of the most iconic cartoon couples. Does anyone in our generation see pink and green and not think of those two floating around with their floaty, crowny, things? This couple takes the “dumb husband, patient but increasingly annoyed wife” trope to new and exciting heights. Cosmo is by no means a merit scholar, but Wanda wouldn’t want him any other way. And she has options. I mean, have you seen Wandisimo? Some of the best episodes of this Nicktoon were focused on their relationship, and no matter what the misunderstanding, even forgetting that the 9,895th anniversary is the False Anger Anniversary, they (with a little help from Timmy) always fixed it. They’re stronger together. Seriously. Their magic is literally weaker when they’re apart.
Winry Rockbell & Edward Elrich (Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood)

Had to put one in here for all my fellow otaku, and who better than the Fullmetal Alchemist and his loyal mechanic, Winry? Far before human transmutation and automail, Ed and Winry were just two kids who fought like cats and dogs. If you ever watched any anime ever, you know that fighting/contempt is the ultimate sign of affection. Ed has been through hell and back on his journey, along with his brother Alphonse, and through all that he grew into the man that Winry would eventually proclaim, well actually yell angrily, her love at. Winry becomes a mechanic for Ed, and even though she doesn’t fully understand the world of alchemy she does everything in her power to help the Elric brothers get their bodies back, even if that means putting her own life in danger. If that’s not true love I don’t know what is.
Who are some your favorite tv couples? Make sure to tell me in the comments and don’t forget to have a Happy Valentine’s Day ! *MWAH*
